FIBROMYALGIA, ‘when muscles always hurt, but the doctor cannnot find anything’.

Literally, fibromyalgia means: pain in muscles and connective tissue. There is chronic pain in muscles, tendons, spread throughout the body and varying in location and character. The complaints occur in the neck/shoulder, lower back/pelvis and the limbs. Often the complaints are accompanied by moodswings. Sometimes it is also called soft tissue rheumatism. The most common complaints are pain, fatigue stiffness and sleep disorders. In the regular Western vision, no physical cause is known. Most people are sent by their doctor to a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist tests certain  ‘tenderpoints’ and based on that, fibromyalgia is diagnosed. Painkillers are often prescribed. Please be aware of the fact that longterm use of painkillers will make it worse in the long run.The liver, the large detoxifying plant of the body, is coming under great pressure. It is often said, that you just have to learn to live with it. Research is being done though.

What has emerged from the studies to date?

The influence of sleep deprivation.

Fibropatients can develop sleeping problems due to persistent pain. They therefore do not fall into deep (delta) sleep. It is precisely in this sleep that the body makes all kind of substances  that take care of recuperation. If you miss this sleep, you also miss the recovery of tissues and muscles and the symptoms are maintained.

Biopsychosocial model

Because the physical cause of fibro has not yet been established, the biopsychosocialmodel is used. This model assumes that there are biological, psychological and social factors that influence fibromyalgia. Fibro patients might suffer from stiffness (biological), they might be a bit gloomy (psychological) and because of this they might havedifficulties to maintain social contacts (social aspect). They can end up in a vicious circle.

Other valid visions on fibromalgia.

* The fibro symptoms worsen due to high acidity in your body. So, acidify.  You can do this with thehelp of  a special herbal tea that is on the market and by banning all refined sugars out of your diet. More foodtips are mentioned in our blog on rheumatism. In due time, we will blog about body acidity.

* The rootcause of fibroyalgia is a leaky gut. A blog on leaky gut will follow, because a leaky gut is the rootcause of many ailments.

Therapies.

* You could work with a physical therapist. Keep moving is important.

* You could work with a BrainQ therapist. This type of therapist works with the regenerative possibilities of the body and with the endorfine system.

* You can choose for a Body Stress Release practitioner. He/she will release muscle tension in a soft manner, so that the nervous system will be able to communicate better.

* There is a special massage technique for fibro. Ask your massage therapist.

* You could work with an osteopath. He/she masters techniques that frees the connective tissue.

* Since stress also plays an important role, Tension Release Exercises will help with fibro. We uploaded a guestblog on this subject earlier this month. You can find it under the header  ‘related subjects’.

Food.

Food is important, also and specially with fibro. Good nutrition is about feeding and not about filling. As said before, ban all refined sugars out of your diet. They cause acidity. Eat fresh, organic food of the season and from the area you live in.

Supplements.

Important is a good vitamine B complex. Also turmeric in the right connection can be helpful.

Movement.

Soft movenments, such as swimming, walking and qi gong have a good effect on fibromalgia.

Herbs.

Painsoothing herbs are clove, black pepper, chili pepper, coriander, turmeric, thyme. You can use all these herbs in your food. With cold pressed olive oil and essential thyme oil, you can make your own body oil to sooth the pain.

Herbs to make you sleep better and deeper, are lavender, chamomile, hop, valerian and lemonbalm. You can make a tea with these herbs and/or you can use essential oils of these herbs in your bedroom.

Finally, start the day with a hot shower and a morning meditation. Also a powernap of 20 minutes after lunch can do good services.
