Fear-terror-terrorist part 2

When I was watching the last pressconference (yes, we are regularly treated to press conferences of our PM in my country since the outbreak of this virus), I was thinking some more about fear. In the last featured blog, I talked about fear in a kind of biological way; what happens in your system when fear arises. But of course fear is multi layered, so, I would like to elaborate on this subject some more.

Often fear (sometimes more in the foreground, sometimes more in the background) determines a person’s actions and of politics, especially in a global crisis we are now in. I involve politics, because whether you like it or not, your whole life is embedded in politics, therefore so is health(care) and because sowing fear is a very effective means of power and control. It is used on a big scale these days.

One could distinguise two types of fear:

  1. immediate fear and
  2. diffuse fear.

Ad 1. Immediate fear is clear and logical. Imagine you are walking in a forest and you see a bear coming. Immediate danger, immediate fear, immediate (instinctive) reaction. This is the fight/flight/freeze reaction. It is a survival reaction that might lead to survival stress that may get locked up in your body if you don’t release it as soon as possible. You could say this was the situation at the beginning of the outbreak of this virus. In my country, images were shown of people dying in the street. There were daily updates on the numbers of deaths. This had never been shown in history as far as my knowledge extends. This has not been done with heart/coronary disease or cancer.

Ad 2. The diffuse fear. The diffuse fear is much more elusive. There is no concrete event as with immediate fear. Where in immediate fear there is a way to deal with fear, there is no way in diffuse fear. There is a general, overall fearful expectation that generates helplessness seeking a way out.  This type of fear focusses inwards, eats into our psyche, in our nervous system, in our organs and focusses on itself and is therefore unpredictable. You could say this phase of fear mongering started when the government switched from death- to contamination messages in the mainstream media.

Fear makes you insecure, fear is a subjective experience. By sowing fear, it is possible that a small group of people can keep a large mass in check. Isn’s that just a nasty power- and control technique? It bears witness to a dehumanizing cruelty.

May I challenge you some more? How does it feel, if I would say in this virus situation: the government is the tumor and the media causes metastases? In my country, we are presented with dilemma’s about climate, the virus and racism. But ‘what if’ it is more about the future of the free West and/or about globalization versus nationalism?

Does this situation make you fearful? What are you most fearful about? Can you feel how fear gives you a tube vision that makes you follow the leader? Or are you trying with all means possible to keep fear at bay?

Enough challenging questions. For now. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t also look somewhat solution-oriented. If you feel fearful or when you have an anxiety disorder, you could consider using the following, soothing, essential oils:

Lavender, vetiver, frankincense, ylang ylang or bergamot. You can use it in a diffuser, in an inhaler, in a carrier oil to rub on yourself, you can add a few drops in a neutral body lotion or you can add a few drops in your bath or footbath.

I feel more blogs on fear-government-media coming, since it is and will be very actual for the time to come.

How is your level of fear at the moment? Care to share?
