Fatty liver

The liver is located in the middle, on the right side, partly under your ribcage, on the same level as your stomach. That’s why you will find a blog on gastric acid and fatty liver in these series of blogs. A liver can become contaminated (a sign of a contaminated liver is f.ex. excessive itching), but a liver can also become fatty. Mary writes the following about it.

———-          ———-          ———-          ———

With a fatty liver there are fatcells in the liver. Nowadays a fatty liver is common, also in people who do not drink alcohol. In this case, it is called:  Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In the meantime, it is ever starting to take on epidemic proportions. The figures in different countries range from 10-35 percent of the population from young to old.

Since the liver is an important organ with many functions, fatty tissue can show a variety of symptoms. A fatty liver is not able to function properly. What noticeably suffers from fatty tissue are the mitochondria. Mitochondri are little power plants in our celles. The liver plays an important part in the digestive process, including the secretion of bile that helps digest dietary fats and supports intestinal activity. The liver stores vitamins and minerals; produces proteins and fats. In the hormonal fiels, the liver takes care of the cholesterol balance. The liver also uses various detoxification procedures to purify the body of all kinds of toxins and waste products. This shows how important it is to take good care of our liver.

When the liver starts storing fats, it can enlarge. The liver has an enormous reserve capacity because of  its important functions, the healthy parts can take over for a very long time. By the time you get complaints, the disease is often well advanced. The complaints are often vague, such as abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weight loss or low grade inflammations.

If you suspect that your liver is in trouble, it is advisable to consult a doctor. He/she can feel if your liver is enlarged and have additional tests done. Fatty liver disease is usually clearly visible on an ultrasound or CT-scan.

What can you do yourself to reverse this process?

You can still reverse it yourself when it comes to a mild form of fatty liver disease. At a more advanced stage, complaints such as muscle weakness may develop.

By ensuring that you keep your sugar intake (fructose) to a minimum, you support your liver. Fructose is converted in your body in a similar way to alcohol. This leads to insulin resistance and abnormal amounts of fat in the bloodstream and this is eventually stored in the liver.

Conditions in which fat metabolism is in some way out of balance: obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, losing weight too quickly, too high triglycerides in the bloodplasma, too little exercise, too much alcohol, viral hepatitis, and the side effect of for example too high intake of paracetamol.

Lifestyle adjustments in case of fatty liver disease

  • A diet with many vegetables
  • A diet with sufficient natural fats. Like fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, tuna.
  • Protein.
  • More physical activities. All twisting movements stimulate the liver to function better.
  • Tackling obesity.
  • Regulate stress.
  • Support the detoxification process.
  • If possible an adaption of the living environment in which non-natural materials are avoided as much as possible.
  • You can support with nutritional supplements and herbs.

Milk thistle has an anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effect.

Garlic helps to reduce body weight.

Green tea is an anti-oxidant and contributes to a better acidity of the body.

Berberine provides a better insulin sensitivity and improves the mitochondrial function of the cell.

This blog shows again how important a good diet is!

I hope I have helped you a little forward and feel free to ask questions.

Mary
