‘The brain is a genius that likes to play.’

This was written in my copy of Brainspotting by David Grand. And this is what surprises most clients in how I work with trauma.

I tend to keep things light and playful, because trauma is stored in the body, the psyche and in the brain and it is important to have the brain ‘on board’ so to speak when dealing with healing trauma.

In my practise I use a variety of brainbased therapies such as Neuro Emotional Integration (Roy Martina), brainspotting (David Grand), Old Pain 2 Go(Steven Blake) and the blast technique (Nick Davies).

These techniques work top down. So you discuss the issue you are dealing with at the moment and then by using these different techniques, whatever fits in that moment, you want to make a shift happen in your brain as a domino effect  you’ll feel lighter in your body and psyche.

And the beauty of it is, that you don’t have to do anything other than to let that happen. The brain is capable of doing this all by itself, you just have to allow this to happen.

And this is where the difficulty lies. It has a lot to do with trust, safety, your capability to self regulate anything that comes up and your personal beliefsystem. It is important that you have a therapist that is compassionate and is capable of attuning to you and holding space for you when you are processing. So as not to interfere in the healin that is taking place. As a therapist you have to be aware of the uncertainty principle, willing not to expect anything and to know when to shut up and be in awe of what is happening within your client.

Then the shift(s) can take place all by itself and it is always a surprise where the brain takes you. Especially in brainspotting you can witness this in front of you.

The other three techniques: NEI, OldPain2Go and the Blast Technique throw in another aspect and that is working with the unconscious brain. The unconscious brain keeps everything for you in store ‘as it is’. It is the raw unprocessed memory. Everything that had overwhelmed you one way or another is stored away to process at a later stage, when you are safe. And again, your unconscious brain can do this processing perfectly without our conscious effort, that is: by itself. We just have to ask politely and then not interfere with what unfolds then. Our brain and our unconscious brain are our best friends, they always want the best for us, keep us alive and always fetch us what we ask for.

The trauma’s that we have, all that unprocessed memory that we carry around, costs us a lot of energy and reflects in the health or lack of health of our body and psyche. It’s like pushing balls under water and keeping them there. Imagine what you can do with all this energy once you have healed your trauma. You can expand!

Life is supposed to be for living and creating. And living the best possible life you can have!

This is my wish for you and all your loved ones.
