The digestive tract according to Ayurveda

A good digestive fire, Agni, is also important within Ayurveda. Agni is the fire that is responsible for all physiological processes in the body. If disease manifests itself, then there is almost always something going on in the intestines.

Agni is a broad concept: Agni is the fire in the gastrointestinal tract. This is called Jathar Agni and is seen as the most important one. Agni is also the fire in each individual cell. Agni is the metabolic process in the liver and between the sites. Agni is the processing of sensory stimuli. Agni is the fire of life. It is the fire that brings about transformation.

When Agni is disturbed, sensory stimuli will be processed less quickly and less well and the same goes for the digestive tract. Food residues will remain in the intestines, and residues will remain in the bloodflow as well. This can turn toxic. These residues are called Ama. Regular detox is most important to get rid of this Ama. In Ayurveda it is said that Ama is the cause of a lot of complaints and diseases. To name a few: arthritis, lower back pain, asthma and headaches.

Since a lot of people are having trouble with their digestive tract, Ayurveda suggests the following:

  • Eat  smaller meals
  • drink water with a few drops of lemon
  • Eat in harmony with the seasons
  • Take time for your meal
  • Make sure the meal looks good
  • Eat according to your constitution
  • Drink ginger tea 15 minutes before your meal.

Ginger is very important according to Ayurveda.

You will find a seperate blog about ginger under herbs.
