Trauma

We talked a lot about stress these past few months and we also talked about what you can do to deminish stress in your life. We would now like to adress trauma, since stress can develop into trauma and trauma gives a whole lot of stress.

Let’s start by stating that everybody has trauma’s. So, trauma is normal, it’s inherent to life. There are two certainties in life: life can and will hurt at some point and everything is always changing. Nothing you can do about that. It’s a given. The way a person deals with pain and change, is depending on the person and his or hers recources.

What is trauma?

Trauma can occur as a result of a physical or emotional injury after a shocking/overwhelming/repeated event.

There are the so called hard trauma’s, like an accident, physical injury, operation, a fire or a natural disaster. But, there are also, less easy to identify, soft trauma’s. Soft trauma’s, or psychotrauma’s are for example:

  • (Long term) mental, sexual or emotional abuse
  • domestic or social violence, like bullying.
  • But also the stories your tell yourself can cause trauma. We call this your own negative selftalk.

Soft trauma’s give hidden scars. As humans, we are neurologically, biologically and psychologically equipped to endure, survice stress and trauma and even evolve from it. When you evolve from it, people will say: ‘you came out stronger’. But, please keep in mind that every event, not only the traumatic ones, has an impact on every cell in the body. That is what we call: cellular memory.

A psychotrauma occurs when normal processing (defense) no longer helps and action no longer seem to benefit. A traumatic reaction consists of hyperactivation, forced re-experiencing, dissociation, repression, fear reactions and emotional flattening.

If this is the case, if this keeps happening over a longer period of time, people can get stuck in trauma. When they keep having reoccuring thoughts and emotions, keep having  re-experiences of the event and/or nightmares, we call it Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

This month you will find a guestblog on PTSD. We will also upload a guestblog on brainspotting, which is a great intervention for trauma related complaints. Both guestblogs you can find under ‘related subjects’.

What are your thoughts on trauma? How do you deal with trauma? Was this blog helpful for you? You can leave a reaction in the comments or you can contact us.
