The five elements part 2

Springtime has arrived! Spring is called the wood element in Chinese medicine. Spring stands for new life, new energy, new ideas. Many people like the spring. The temperatures are going up, new leaves growing on the trees. That beautiful delicate green everywhere. During wintertime, nature looked as if dead, but in reality, Mother Nature was restoring her energy. Restoring her energy is much needed for springtime to come. During spring, Mother Nature goes from apparently dead to an outburst of energy in  very short period of time.

Something similar happens in the human body. Note: the human body IS nature. From the apparent inertia of the winter, to the outgoing energy of the spring, for the human body it is like switching gear from 0 to 100 in a few seconds. This process costs the body a lot of energy and therefore some people get springfatigue.

In Chinese medicine, the organs of the spring, are the liver and the gall bladder.

The emotion that belongs to the liver, is anger. The colour that belongs to the liver is green. The liver is responsable for the free and soft flow of qi and blood in your body. Qi is the total amount of energy you have and every organ has its own qi. The eyes, tendons and nails are connected to the liver. So, if there are issues with anger, your eyes, tendons and/or nails, you can try to balance the liver qi to get rid of those ailments. A blog on skin, hair and nails, will follow later this month.

If you constantly crave sour foods, or when you are under a great deal of stress and when you are easily angry and irritated, the energy of the liver  is out of balance and needs support. You can support this energy by not drinking alcohol, soft and easy exercises and releasing emotions in a healthy way. Take things nice and slow and don’t let yourself get caught up in all the new energies of springtime.
