SUMMER

The summer is here! Whoohoo! Mother Nature is in full bloom and the temperatures are going up. In Chinese medicine, the summer is called the fire element. It is the season of abundant energy, expansion, growth and activity. You just have to look outside to understand what is happening in your body.

The organs of the summer are the heart and the small intestine. The colour that belongs to this element is red (this is the analogy to the heart, the blood and the bloodvessels) and the emotion is joy. In Chinese medicine, the heart is considered the emperor.

This period of year influences warmth/heat and the energy turns outwardly. In the human body, the heart is influenced by the mind and the spirit. This is the time to feed and calm the spirit and to be aware of all the possibilities to enjoy yourself.

When the fire element is in balance, the heart is healthy and strong, the mind and spirit calm and the sleep beneficial.

When this element is unbalanced, there is a lack of joy, confusion arises, as well as memoryproblems, heartburn and sleeplessness.

A few tips to help you through a balanced summer:

* Get up earlier than you are used to, take a powernap after lunch and go to sleep a little later.

* Drink enough water.

* Let the sun feed you.

* Add spicy flavors to your diet.

* Keep your mood neutral. Don’t overheat in any way.

* Don’t overdo anything.
